Chrono & ChronoDASH Training Guide for New Users

Welcome to Chrono, a powerful tool by RTConfidence for managing project schedules and risks in the A&Dand Space industries. This guide introduces new users to Chrono’s core features: creating an Integrated Master Schedule (IMS), running Schedule Risk Analysis (SRA), and performing Earned Value Management (EVM). Follow these steps to get started and effectively manage your projects.

Getting Started with Chrono

Overview
Chrono helps you plan, track, and analyze project schedules with tools like wizards, automated metrics, and risk simulations. It’s designed to simplify complex project management tasks using a user-friendly interface.

Initial Setup

1.  Download and Open Chrono:

After downloading, locate the sample
file: Documents/RTConfidence/ChronoAdvTraining.mpt.
Save a copy with a new name (e.g., MyProject.mpt) to avoid overwriting the template.
Open the file in Chrono; it launches with the Chrono Tab active.

2. Log In:

When prompted, use the email address from your download and set a password.
This grants access to simulation outputs and cloud-based processing.

3. Understand the Chrono Tab:

The Chrono Tab is your main hub for most actions (e.g., running simulations, updating tasks).
Exception: Adjusting non-working days requires accessing the Project Calendar outsidethe Chrono Tab.

Building an Integrated Master Schedule (IMS)

What is an IMS?
An IMS is a comprehensive project schedule that outlinestasks, durations, dependencies, and resources. Chrono helps you create an IMSready for risk analysis and EVM.

Steps to Create an EVM-Ready IMS

1. Use the Reference Template

Start with ChronoAdvTraining.mpt, a pre-built IMS template.
Review tasks, durations, and dependencies in the Gantt chart view.

2. Set 3-Point Estimates for Risky Tasks:

Identify tasks withuncertainty (e.g., design, testing, or outsourced work).
Use the Chrono Wizard to input:
       Best-Case Duration: Optimistic estimate.
       Most-Likely Duration: Expected estimate.
       Worst-Case Duration: Pessimistic estimate.
Example: For a task with potential delays, input "Up to a 45 work-day slip due to more iterations than expected."

3. Define Task Relationships:

Set predecessors and successors to establish task dependencies.
Example: If Task ID 68 must finish before Task ID 69 starts, set Task ID 68 as the predecessor.

4. Validate the IMS:

Use Chrono’s validation tools to ensure no errors (e.g., missing dependencies or illogical durations).
Validation is critical for accurate SRA and EVM.

5. Add Cost Data:

Input resource costs (e.g., $57,600 for an Electrical Engineer for a task).
Assign resources via the Resources Tab in the task details.

Performing Schedule Risk Analysis (SRA)

What is an SRA?
SRA uses Monte Carlo simulations to predict schedule risksand estimate completion dates with confidence levels.

Running an SRA

1.  Prepare the IMS:

Ensure your IMS is validated and includes 3-point estimates for risky tasks.
Save your project file to preserve the baseline.

2.  Run the Simulation:

In the Chrono Tab, click Run Simulation.
Log in if prompted, then view the Browser Simulation Output (e.g., distribution charts, tornado charts).
Check the Commitment Milestone (the final IMS milestone) in the distribution chart.

3.  Interpret Results:

Distribution Chart: Shows the probability of meeting the project completion date.
Tornado Charts: Highlight tasks with the highest risk impact.
Gantt Charts: Display critical path and risk-adjusted schedules.
Example: A 73% commit confidence indicates a high likelihood of meeting the schedule.

4.  Update After Changes:

If you modify tasks (e.g., delete a successor like Task ID 123), re-run the simulation to update outputs.
Look for Red Flags in the interface, signaling that a simulation is needed.

Performing Earned Value Management (EVM)

What is an EVM?
EVM tracks project performance by comparing planned work(Planned Value), completed work (Earned Value), and actual costs.

Key EVM Metrics

Earned Value (EV): Value of completed work based on estimated costs.
Planned Value (PV): Budgeted cost of scheduled work.
Actual Cost (AC): Costs incurred for completed work.
Schedule Performance Index (SPI): SPI = EV / PV (measures schedule efficiency).
Planned Value (PV): Budgeted cost of scheduled work.
Cost Performance Index (CPI): CPI = EV / AC (measures cost efficiency).
Earned Schedule (ES): Alternative to SPI, based on task durations (ES = Baseline Duration * % Complete).

Steps to Perform EVM

1. Set Up EVM

Ensure your IMS has a baseline Budget at Completion (BAC).
Input actual costs for completed tasks via the Chrono Wizard.

2.  Track Progress:

Update task % Complete and actual costs periodically (e.g., during updates on 5/30/2025, 6/27/2025).
Example: For Task ID 68, add 5 days to remaining duration if delayed.

3. Review Metrics:

View EVM metrics (SPI, CPI, ES) in the Gantt view.
Use Distribution Trend Charts to monitor project health over time.

Updating and Re-Baselining the Schedule

Updating the Schedule

1.  Use the Project Progress Update Wizard:

Set the update date (e.g., 5/30/2025 for Update #1).
Record task progress (e.g., % Complete, days remaining).
Example: For Update #2 on 6/27/2025, adjust Task ID 68’s remaining duration from 9 to 14 days.

2. Preview and Publish

Select Preview to review changes in the Gantt chart.
Click Publish to finalize updates and update charts (e.g., SPI/CPI trends).

Re-Baselining the Schedule

1.  When to Re-Baseline:

Re-baseline if major changes occur (e.g., design changes requiring new tasks).
Example: Add a new “Schematic Design 2” task (Task ID 69) with a 30-day duration.

2.  Steps to Re-Baseline:

Save a new file version (e.g., MyProject_BL_and_Updates.mpt).
Make changes (e.g., adjust Task ID 70’s duration from 90 to 120 days).
Run a simulation to check the new commit confidence (e.g., from 0% to 73%).
Reset milestone dates to align with the updated schedule.

Key Tips for Success

Save Regularly: Always save a copy of your project file before major changes.
Run Simulations Often: Re-run simulations after any task or dependency changes to keep     outputs current.
Use Wizards: Chrono’s wizards simplify tasks like setting 3-point estimates and updating     progress.
Check DCMA 14-Point Metrics: Use Chrono’s automated evaluation to ensure your IMS meets     industry standards.
Understand Risks: Focus on high-risk tasks (e.g., design, testing, outsourcing) and     use SRA outputs to mitigate them.
